Well, unfortunately I used as a base a paint that you can't get anymore - Plum Red by company called Miniature Paints - my bottle is from the nineties. It's a very rich, deep, rather dark red - I use two layers over white undercoat. Then a wash of dark brown (I mix Army Painter Strong Tone wash with their Dark Tone wash) and then Vallejo Blood Red as highlight. Very simple, but probably rather hard to replicate exactly.

But really, the "secret" is the dark brown wash with a bit of black wash (something like 3:1), essentially. And this can be done with, e.g., GW washes (though Army Painter ones are fantastic and cheap).

Resistance is non-futile.
