I understand your point of view, and it's true that we don't impose a restricted gameboard in the rules. But it's also true that the game - at its core - is best played on a small gameboard.
We don't see it as a way to shrink the world though, but it's meant to represent the heated battle of a small force encountering foes, so the scale is set accordingly. And the 'story' of the battle unfold itsef, sort of, with the Missions. Your Convoy scouts, sent to the nearest water tank for supply find themselves suddenly attacked by fearsome Drones, capturing your comrades as you try to defend your ressources. A small Matriarchy force, bringing back recently discovered holy relics, is ambushed by Jokers eager to loot some good weapons (and/or having their ways with the Sisters). Really, the world is there, the size makes it a fast paced game, where immediate actions and decisions must be taken in order to overcome your opponent.
That's the intentions we like to emphasize too (along with making it an easy game to store/transport).
But your point of view is indeed valuable. We like to hear that sort of experience and desire from our players, because it reflects lots of different things from the community. Do tell us how it turned out with bigger teams and wider board. Who knows, maybe the next book will have specific rules for bigger battles
