We found that 2x2 can seem a bit cramped at times, especially considering how much terrain we like to use. Generally we play on a 3x3 board, it doesn't really impact the game that much since deployment is drawn from the center line. We also assume the 'corners', if needed for any missions, are still a 2x2 square in the middle. Having the extra room really just allows for the game to be more visually impressive. For casual play, I prefer 3x3 for most games.
